Vicar

For the Parish of St Thomas with St Stephen, Balham

Location:

London and Home Counties

Recruiter:

Ref: JN013722

An exciting opportunity to lead this lively, committed, family-friendly, open evangelical church in Balham, South West London. St Thomas with St Stephen is a diverse congregation of newer and longer standing members, with a mixture of ages and stages, seeking to grow in faith and service to the local community. We want to see many others come to find the fullness of life in Jesus so that together we can represent the breadth of faith, expression and diversity of those in our church family and local communities.

We want to see adults, children and young people discover their God-given gifts and calling, as they discover the significance of Jesus Christ in their lives. We seek to offer an open welcome for all to our multi-generational, multi-ethnic and inclusive community, along with opportunities for connection with the local community through:

  • our thriving work with children and families
  • the community cafe (The Hive), our weekly lunch club, community garden and our Little Bears (weekday “church and play” sessions)
  • the many externally provided activities which take place in our church building
  • thoughtful and open-minded scriptural teaching and engaging, lively worship
  • home groups exploring scripture more deeply and offering prayer and fellowship

We seek a servant hearted, compassionate leader, who:

  • will lead us prayerfully, nurturing and encouraging us to grow as disciples of Jesus
  • will develop others so our leaders can be representative of the whole church family
  • is a good communicator and teacher (for all ages), able to open up scripture for those at different stages of their faith journey, with a calling to bring others to faith
  • will support the growth and development of our thriving children’s ministry and established youth ministry
  • has a heart for prayer and a vision for ministry and service to those in the church family and beyond
  • will help grow and develop our vision to reach out to our local community to share the gospel, bring others to Christ, and to serve
  • is inclusive and outward looking, confident in their own position and able to lead a broad church with openness and respect for those who may think differently

We offer:

  • a talented and enthusiastic team comprising paid staff (including both Youth and Families Ministers) and many lay volunteers
  • a supportive and engaged PCC and wider community ready to learn and grow
  • diverse traditions of liturgy, music and worship - with an emphasis on family friendly services and welcome
  • a comfortable semi-detached, 4-bedroom vicarage with large garden, garage and off-road parking
